Speaking Up for Small Businesses

Rising Healthcare Costs

Healthcare costs are one of the most pressing challenges that small businesses face today. For JetCo Federal, the quality and cost of our healthcare coverage affects hiring, retention, and the health of our team. Representing the concerns of small businesses, our President, Sue Tellier, recently joined Crain’s Grand Rapids and Detroit Business for critical discussions on healthcare alongside leaders from Blue Cross Blue Shield, medical physicians, policy advocates, and the Small Business Association of Michigan (SBAM).

Our presence in this conversation wasn’t just symbolic – it was intentional. In a room full of large corporations, we were proud to be the voice for the 902,000 small businesses in Michigan that employ 1.9 million workers.

Participating in this dialogue also gave us a chance to reflect on the benefits we offer to our team members. As a small business, it can be difficult to compete with companies that have greater resources. JetCo Federal has what we think is a comprehensive benefits package that goes beyond the basics to truly support the well-being of our employees.

Here’s a snapshot of what we provide:

  • Health Insurance – Premiums partially covered by JetCo and a competitive plan that makes care accessible.
  • Health Savings Account – pre-tax savings with employer contributions.
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP) – Through Pine Rest, offering confidential mental health support.
  • Generous Vacation Time – 10 vacation days to start, increasing to 13 days after 3 years and 15 days after 5 years. 10 paid holidays – 2 of the employee’s choosing.
  • Paid Volunteer Day – A day to give back to causes our team members care about.
  • Free Will/Estate Planning – Peace of mind and practical support for the future.
  • Retirement Support – A 3% company match to Simple IRA.
  • Dog-Friendly Office – Because we love dogs.
  • Hybrid Work Flexibility – The freedom to do great work, wherever you do it best. Not to mention, the ability to participate in summer hours – because who doesn’t want to enjoy a Michigan summer?

Looking Ahead

Our voice at the Crain Business healthcare discussion was one of many, and we’ll keep showing up to these conversations to ensure that small businesses and their people aren’t left behind. For us, it’s not just about staying competitive, it’s about offering sustainable healthcare solutions to our people so they feel supported and valued.
