Sue Schweim-Tellier Named Among Crain’s 2024 Notable Nonprofit Board Leaders

Sue Schweim-Tellier, President of JetCo Federal, was selected as one of Crain’s Grand Rapids Business’ 2024 Notable Nonprofit Board Leaders for her accomplishments as President of Women In Defense (WID) – Michigan chapter.

During Sue’s term as president, WID Michigan advanced its standing in the Michigan defense community as a national example for other chapters to model. She led the organization to establish events that mattered immensely to members, donors, and sponsors that increased awareness within the defense industry.

One of Sue’s most notable experiences during her term was in April of 2023 when WID-MI became the largest WID chapter in the country – bigger than Washington D.C., Huntsville, and San Diego, which are all known for being strong defense regions. To this date, WID-MI represents almost 30% of WID’s national membership. This alone showcases Michigan’s relevance as a defense industry powerhouse throughout the nation. Additionally, more than $20K in scholarships were awarded and annual sponsor support rose by over $50K.

Kim Bode, Director of Communications of the WID-MI board and CEO of 8ThirtyFour Integrated Communications, said, “Sue is my hero – the kind of leader I want to be when I grow up. For more than 15 years, I’ve watched her do it all with zero apologies and a lot of impact. She’s brilliant, hilarious, and will tell you exactly what you need to hear, whether you are ready or not. This recognition is overdue but perfectly timed – just like her sarcasm and swear words.”

Women In Defense (WID) is a national organization with chapters in many states that manage relationships with defense industry stakeholders. In the Michigan chapter of WID, there are 11 board members, 20 advisors to the board, and more than 500 members.

The work doesn’t stop there for Sue. In addition to Sue’s notable work with WID-MI, Sue continues to stay involved with several organizations. Sue is the Immediate Past Chair of the WID National Council; Vice Chair for Women Impacting Public Policy (WIPP); Immediate Past Chair for the Small Business Association of Michigan (SBAM); and Board Member on the Michigan Strategic Fund. Her education includes a BS from Michigan State University and a Graduate Certificate in Economic Development from Wayne State University.
